Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger took the unusual step of authorising the signing of
Freddie Ljungberg having watched the Swedish International face, and beat, England
on television. Explaining his actions, Wenger went on to elaborate:
"I have been aware of Ljungberg for some time but after watching him
on Saturday I decided to move for him very quickly.
We knew he was doing well in Swedish football but the pace of the
game there is slower and not so demanding. I wanted to see how he
performed against England and it was very impressive. "
Consequently in September 1998 Ljungberg signed for Arsenal from his only other
club, Swedish side BK Halmstad, where he had made 139 appearances and scored
16 goals.
It won't have gone un-noticed that Freddie has been given Ian Wright's old squad
number but it must be stressed that, although scoring on his debut versus
Manchester United, he has not been bought as a replacement goalscorer, but rather
as an attacking midfield/utility player more in the mould of the now retired David Platt.
